Installation of 'Pigeon Habitat Prevention Facilities' on Cheongdam Bridge and Bukbu Elevated Highway Bridge
Prevention of Bridge Structure Damage Caused by Pigeon Droppings and Relief of Inconvenience for Nearby Citizens Expected
Installed at 4 Locations on 3 Bridges... Effect Observed Since Partial Installation in April Last Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul Facilities Corporation announced on the 10th that it has additionally installed bird prevention facilities at four locations on three bridges, including the Cheongdam Bridge Ttukseom Riverside Park section and the Northern Arterial Elevated Bridge, to prevent pigeons from inhabiting under the bridges.
The undersides of bridges provide shelter from wind and rain and are located 6 to 12 meters above ground, creating an environment suitable for pigeons to inhabit. However, as pigeons live there, citizens using nearby walking paths and exercise facilities have experienced discomfort due to feathers and droppings. Moreover, the highly acidic droppings cause corrosion of steel reinforcements and other metal parts of the bridges, as well as chemical damage to the concrete, contributing to bridge deterioration and reduced durability.
Accordingly, the corporation, which manages Seoul's automobile-only roads, installed pigeon prevention facilities last year on three bridges where pigeon habitation was most frequent, including the Northern Elevated Bridge on the Inner Ring Road and Dumo Bridge on the Riverside North Road. After monitoring for one year and confirming effectiveness, four additional locations were added this year. The targeted areas were sections under bridges with gaps and drainage pipes, high foot traffic, exercise facilities, and frequent pigeon appearances.
The pigeon prevention facilities, called ‘Bird Coil’ and ‘Bird Slide,’ were collaboratively developed by the corporation and Korea Agricultural and Forestry System, a specialized company for wildlife damage prevention facilities, and have been in use since last year. Fundamentally, these devices have a structure that prevents pigeons from landing, offering advantages in cost-effectiveness and ease of maintenance.

Jeon Ki-sung, Acting Chairman, stated, “I believe this is a good example of maintaining the durability of facilities managed by the corporation while reducing inconvenience to citizens,” and added, “We will continue to pursue various initiatives not only in facility maintenance, which is the corporation’s core duty, but also to enhance citizen convenience.”
