"Do Not Be Deceived by Texts Pretending to Be from Korea Asset Management Corporation"
KAMCO Does Not Engage in Loan Brokerage or Customer Solicitation via Apps or Text Messages
Special Caution Required
[Asia Economy Reporter Sim Nayoung] Korea Asset Management Corporation (KAMCO) announced on the 9th that special caution is required as voice phishing scams impersonating KAMCO, the National Happiness Fund, and commercial banks have been continuously occurring.
Recently, voice phishing scam groups have been impersonating government agencies such as KAMCO to induce personal information leakage and money transfers. They mainly exploit terms with high public interest, such as COVID-19 loss compensation and small business policy funds, to carry out their fraudulent activities.
The voice phishing scam groups have become bolder in their criminal methods, even illegally operating websites impersonating government agencies. Additionally, by inducing the installation of smartphone apps impersonating KAMCO and others, they cause victims to mistake them for public institutions, making the scam methods increasingly sophisticated.
In particular, smartphone apps that are induced to be installed via text messages or SNS are mostly malicious hacking programs. If customers call the customer support centers of financial companies using phones with malicious apps installed, they are automatically connected to the scam groups, posing a high risk of damage.
KAMCO urged the public to prevent voice phishing damage by △ not calling back phone numbers from text messages advertising or arranging loans △ not clicking on website addresses of unclear origin or installing apps △ being cautious of loan scams that demand money under the pretense of loans △ and not providing personal financial transaction information such as bankbooks or employment certificates containing personal information under the pretext of application documents.
