Jeonnam Province Hosts International Conference on Ancient Mahan Culture in Haenam Hyeonsan
[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province is systematically organizing the ancient Mahan historical culture through cooperation with domestic and international public, private, and academic sectors.
The province announced on the 8th that it will hold an international academic conference titled "The Mahan Small State Settled in Hyeonsan, Haenam" for two days starting from the 9th at the Haenam Culture and Arts Center.
This academic conference aims to evaluate the academic value of the Haenam Eupho-ri burial mound cluster, the largest burial mound cluster in the Mahan cultural area, and to establish preservation and utilization plans to clarify the Mahan history of the Haenam region.
On the first day, following a field survey of the currently investigated Haenam Eupho-ri burial mound cluster, six presentations will be held starting with a keynote speech by Professor Lee Jeong-ho of Dongshin University on the theme "Important Mahan Cultural Heritage of Hyeonsan and Baekpoman," including the value of the Gungok-ri shell mound.
After the presentations, an in-depth comprehensive discussion will follow, chaired by Professor Kwon Oh-young of Seoul National University, to re-examine the historical value of the Mahan cultural zone's relics (artifacts).
On the 10th, seven presentations are scheduled, including a keynote speech by Professor Kang Bong-ryong of Mokpo National University on "The Political, Economic, Social, and Cultural History of the Mahan Shinmi State," and a presentation by Professor Takada Kanta of the National Museum of Japanese History on "Cases of 5th-6th Century Interactions between the Haenam Region and Wa." The conference will conclude with a comprehensive discussion chaired by Professor Lee Jeong-ho of Dongshin University.
Professor Lee Jeong-ho said, "This international academic conference will be a very valuable time with great academic significance to understand the relationship between Mahan and Baekje in the Haenam region, as well as Mahan's politics and society."
Kim Young-shin, Director of the Tourism, Culture, and Sports Bureau of Jeonnam Province, said, "Last year, the Special Act on the Maintenance of Historical and Cultural Areas was enacted, providing a national-level basis for support and infrastructure for the preservation and maintenance of historical and cultural areas. We expect this international academic conference to confirm the reality of Mahan culture and further serve as an opportunity to widely promote its global value."
The province plans to continuously promote the holding of Mahan cultural events, support for the investigation and excavation of Mahan relics, and the hosting of academic conferences by establishing a cooperative system with domestic and international public, private, and academic sectors.
