Gwangju Superintendent-Elect Lee Jeong-seon: "Transition Committee to Be Staffed with Education Experts"
Chairman Jeong Cheol-ung and Vice Chairman Im Hyeong-taek Confirmed Among 30 Members Announced
Citizen Cooperation, Policy Vision, and Smart Support Subcommittees Operated... Two Committees Directly Under the President-Elect Managed
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeong Cheol-ung, advisor of the Gwangju Environmental Movement Union, has been appointed as the chairman of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Superintendent of Education Transition Committee, and Professor Lim Hyeong-taek of Gwangju University has been appointed as the vice chairman.
Lee Jeong-seon, the elected superintendent of Gwangju City Education Office, announced on the 7th that he had appointed 30 members including 12 transition committee members, 8 expert committee members, and 10 working-level committee members who will draft the blueprint for innovative inclusive education.
Lee plans to operate this organization with three subcommittees: the Citizen Cooperation Subcommittee, the Policy Vision Subcommittee, and the Smart Support Subcommittee, as well as two committees directly under the superintendent-elect: the Future Education Special Committee and the Advisory Committee.
Additionally, the Future Education Special Committee and the Advisory Committee directly under the superintendent-elect will be formed for Gwangju’s future education in areas such as AI and climate environment.
Jeong Cheol-ung, the chairman of the transition committee, is originally from Haenam, graduated from Gwangju High School and Korea University with a degree in Education, and has devoted himself to democratization and environmental movements. He has served as auditor of the May 18 Memorial Foundation, co-representative of the Gwangju Citizens’ Organizations Council, and co-representative of the Environmental Movement Union.
Professor Lim Hyeong-taek is recognized as an authority in youth counseling and lifelong education and is actively involved in various youth movements such as the Youth Politics School.
The head of the Citizen Cooperation Subcommittee is Kim Je-an, principal of Gwangju Physical Education High School; the head of the Policy Vision Subcommittee is Kim Seon-seong, principal of Sangmu High School; and the head of the Smart Support Subcommittee is Moon Jong-min, former principal of Gwangju Physical Education High School. Lee Geon-sang, former general director of Jeonnam Ilbo and a transition committee member, was appointed as the spokesperson for the transition committee.
Among the transition committee members and expert and working-level committee members, current teaching staff will be requested to work on secondment in accordance with the Local Education Autonomy Act and ordinances.
Lee said, “I wanted to organize the transition committee as a group of education experts,” adding, “Over the next month, we plan to understand the education office’s tasks and listen to the voices of various education stakeholders to draft the blueprint for Gwangju education.”

Meanwhile, the transition committee will hold its first full meeting at 11 a.m. on the 8th at the Education Training Institute’s transition committee office and plans to announce the list of members of the Future Education Special Committee and the Advisory Committee.
