The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on that day, the number of confirmed cases increased by 9,835, bringing the total to 18,163,686. The number of new confirmed cases falling below 10,000 is the first time in three days since the 2nd (9,894 cases). Looking only at Sunday announcement figures, it is the first time in 19 weeks since January 23 (7,625 cases).
Even considering the reduced number of diagnostic tests due to the previous day being a holiday Saturday, the decrease in new confirmed cases was clear. The number of new confirmed cases on that day decreased by 2,213 compared to the previous day (12,048 cases). It is 2,812 fewer than a week ago on May 29 (12,647 cases), and 9,453 fewer than two weeks ago on May 22 (19,288 cases).
Recently, the number of new confirmed cases has repeatedly fallen below 10,000 due to holiday effects and then risen back to the 10,000 range. From the 30th of last month for one week, the daily new confirmed cases were 6,135 → 17,185 → 15,790 → 9,894 → 12,542 → 12,048 → 9,835, with a daily average of 11,918 cases.
Among the new confirmed cases on that day, 48 were imported from overseas, and the remaining 9,787 were locally transmitted cases within the country. By region (including imported cases), Gyeonggi had 2,190 cases, Seoul 1,719, Gyeongbuk 751, Daegu 615, Gyeongnam 572, Chungnam 491, Busan 472, Incheon 415, Gangwon 384, Jeonbuk 378, Jeonnam 354, Chungbuk 327, Daejeon 313, Ulsan 307, Gwangju 262, Jeju 179, Sejong 105, and quarantine 1 case.
The number of COVID-19 deaths reported the previous day was 20, an increase of 11 from the day before (9). By age group, 10 (50%) were aged 80 or older, 4 each in their 70s and 60s, and 2 in their 50s. The cumulative number of deaths is 24,258, with a cumulative fatality rate of 0.13% for COVID-19.
