Immediately after receiving the award and stepping onto the stage, Song Kang-ho said, "First, I would like to thank the great writer and director Koreeda. I want to share this honor with actors Kang Dong-won, Lee Ji-eun, Lee Joo-young, and Bae Doona with deep gratitude. My beloved family is also here with me today. I am happy as it feels like a great gift. I dedicate the glory of this trophy and my eternal love. Lastly, I dedicate this honor to the countless Korean movie fans," expressing his acceptance speech.
This is the second time a Korean actor has won at Cannes, following Jeon Do-yeon, who won Best Actress in 2007 for director Lee Chang-dong's "Secret Sunshine." Song Kang-ho had played the male lead in that film.
For Asian actors, this is the third time winning Best Actor, following Ge You (Gal Woo) for the 1994 film "To Live," Tony Leung Chiu-wai (Yang Zhaowei) for the 2000 film "In the Mood for Love," and Yagira Yuya for the 2004 film "Nobody Knows."
Previously, Song Kang-ho had been invited to Cannes six times with the films "The Host," "Secret Sunshine," "The Good, the Bad, the Weird," "Thirst," "Parasite," and "Emergency Declaration."
