Luxury Gwangyang Maesil, Full-Scale Shipment Begins
Namgo Maesil Scheduled for Total Purchase of 3,300 Tons from June 15 to July 3
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] In Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do, the largest plum production area in South Korea with optimal plum cultivation conditions due to its warm climate and abundant sunlight, the full-scale shipment of plums has begun.
At the first shipment ceremony of the 2022 Gwangyang plums held on the 25th at the Okgok branch selection center of the Gwangyang Dongbu Nonghyup, local distribution officials including Jeong Sang-beom, Director of the Gwangyang Agricultural Technology Center, Lim Seong-jae, Head of the Nonghyup Central Association Gwangyang Branch, and heads of regional Nonghyup attended, toured the plum purchasing and sorting site, and encouraged the related parties and plum producers.
This year, the purchasing schedule through Nonghyup is planned to buy a total of 3,300 tons: green plums until June 17, and Namgo plums from June 15 to July 3.
Gwangyang plums are characterized by higher citric acid content, stronger aroma, and vivid color compared to plums from other regions. Since 2015, they have been recognized as Korea’s top luxury plums, winning the Grand Prize for Consumer Trust Brand awarded by the Korea Brand Management Association for seven consecutive years.
The city is promoting various customized policy projects such as support for plum orchard pruning labor before tree dormancy, support for powered pruning shears, and support for direct transaction packaging materials to further enhance the competitiveness of Gwangyang plums and maintain their reputation as premium plums.
Additionally, to expand the consumption of Gwangyang plums, various promotional activities are actively underway, including support for home shopping sales, operation of online plum markets, distribution of plum seed separators for pickled plum processing, and consumer publicity.
