Suncheon City Operates 'MacGyver Shared Blacksmith Shop' with Residents
Operation of New MacGyver Training and Unique Experience Programs
[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City in Jeollanam-do announced on the 26th that it will officially operate the ‘MacGyver Shared Blacksmith Shop’ starting next month to revitalize rural areas by supporting the stable settlement of young and middle-aged returnees to farming.
The city remodeled the former Ihwa Daycare Center located in Igok Village, Nagan-myeon, and reborn it as the ‘MacGyver Shared Blacksmith Shop’ for MacGyvers who settled in rural areas and local residents.
The first floor is equipped with a woodworking room, self-interior space, and a creative space room, while the second floor has an education room for various training sessions and meetings.
At the shared blacksmith shop, education for the successful settlement of new MacGyvers and various experience classes for local residents will be operated. Next month, one-day special lectures such as woodworking experience, glass upcycling, and digital education are planned.
The Suncheon-type MacGyver project, which has been promoted since 2020, is a program that supports young and middle-aged people under 50 years old who wish to return to farming and rural living in eup and myeon areas by providing housing and stable settlement support in exchange for helping rural elders with simple home repairs or daily inconveniences.
By last year, 24 people had settled in Suncheon’s rural areas, and the satisfaction rate among village residents reached 90%.

A Suncheon city official said, “We plan to create a shared blacksmith shop that works together with residents by operating various educational programs reflecting the characteristics of MacGyvers and the needs of village residents,” adding, “We will foster a lively community atmosphere by attracting young and middle-aged populations to eup and myeon areas.”
