Professor Oh Yu-kyung of Seoul National University College of Pharmacy Appointed as Head of MFDS... 'Expertise + Field Experience' Ideal Candidate
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] Oh Yoo-kyung, a professor at Seoul National University College of Pharmacy who has been nominated as the head of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, has been a prominent figure mentioned from the early stages of the new government's appointment process for ministerial and agency heads.
Born in 1965, Professor Oh graduated from Seoul National University College of Pharmacy and its Graduate School's Department of Physical Pharmacy, and earned her Ph.D. in Pharmacy from the State University of New York. She subsequently worked at Boryung Pharmaceutical's development department and as a senior researcher at SK Chemicals Life Science R&D Center. She also served as an examiner in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Division at the Korean Intellectual Property Office, a professor at CHA University, and a professor at Korea University College of Life Sciences.
In 2009, she was appointed associate professor at Seoul National University College of Pharmacy, and last year, she gained attention as the first female dean in the 106-year history of the college. She concurrently holds the positions of president of the Korean Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology and chairperson of the Korean Council of Pharmacy Education.
As a pharmaceutical expert, Professor Oh is recognized as the ideal candidate to lead the Yoon Seok-yeol administration's "scientific quarantine" policy, including support for the development of COVID-19 therapeutics, due to her expertise in pharmaceutical research and development as well as her extensive field experience.

Since the head of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety is a vice-ministerial position and not subject to a confirmation hearing, it is expected that Professor Oh will assume the position immediately upon the departure of the current head, Kim Kang-lip.
