New Zealand Extends Troop Deployment in Solomon Islands... Begins Full-Scale China Containment
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] The New Zealand government announced that it will extend the deployment period of its defense forces sent to the Solomon Islands for maintaining security. This move is interpreted as an effort to check China, as the Solomon Islands has recently emerged as a battleground between the West and China following the conclusion of a security agreement with China.
On the 24th (local time), Nanaia Mahuta, New Zealand's Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated in a press release, "We have decided to extend the deployment period of our defense forces in the Solomon Islands at least until May next year," adding, "The two countries will enhance cooperation on various issues such as security cooperation, economic matters, and climate change to promote regional peace."
Since last year, after large-scale riots opposing the government's pro-China policy broke out in the Solomon Islands, neighboring countries including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea have dispatched troops under the name of peacekeeping forces to maintain security and defense. However, since the Solomon Islands announced in March that it had signed a security agreement with China, Australia and New Zealand have been on high alert regarding the Solomon Islands' pro-China policy.
Earlier, the New Zealand government expressed concerns about the recently signed security agreement between the Solomon Islands and China and also stated that it had received confirmation from the Solomon Islands government that the agreement would not lead to the establishment of a Chinese military base.
