EU Commission President: "Russia Weaponizes Not Only Energy but Also Food"
"Only Global Cooperation Is the 'Antidote' to Russia's Threats"
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Union (EU) Commission, has been reported by major foreign media to say that Russia is using food supply as a weapon to threaten.
On the 24th (local time), President von der Leyen made these remarks at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting (WEF, Davos Forum) held in Davos, Switzerland.
President von der Leyen said, “We are witnessing how Russia is weaponizing its energy supplies,” adding, “This is having international effects, and we are seeing the same pattern emerging in food security.”
He stated, “Russian artillery is deliberately bombing grain warehouses across Ukraine,” and “Russian warships in the Black Sea are blocking Ukrainian vessels carrying wheat and sunflower seeds.”
He continued, “Russia is now suppressing supply to raise international prices or trading wheat in exchange for political support,” and “They are stockpiling their food exports as a form of threat.”
