The Ministry of Health and Welfare emphasized that even after the withdrawal of nominee Minister Jeong Ho-young, the health and welfare duties will be carried out smoothly under the leadership of the 1st and 2nd Vice Ministers.
According to the Ministry, 1st Vice Minister Jo Gyu-hong and 2nd Vice Minister Lee Gi-il held an emergency executive meeting on the morning of the 24th to ensure stable management of COVID-19 prevention and health and welfare tasks. They urged all staff internally to maintain vigilance and establish public service discipline to focus on policy work for the people.
Vice Ministers Jo and Lee also stated that they will prepare to promptly execute the supplementary budget once it is approved by the National Assembly, including support for the recovery of daily life from COVID-19 and stabilization of low-income households. They added that they will steadily prepare major health and welfare policy tasks, including the new government's national agenda.
Earlier, nominee Jeong, appointed on the 10th of last month, voluntarily resigned the night before after 43 days of nomination amid controversy over 'Dad's chance' involving preferential treatment for his children's school admission and military service. Although the Presidential Office immediately began selecting a successor, considering the June 1 local elections and National Assembly hearings, the leadership vacuum in health and welfare is expected to continue for some time.
