Gwangju Mayor Candidate Ju Gi-hwan Promises "Expansion of Bicycle Lanes and Securing Pedestrian Spaces"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Joo Ki-hwan, the People Power Party candidate for mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, promised to "repair and expand bicycle roads" along with "securing pedestrian spaces."
On the 23rd, candidate Joo stated, "We will repave the aging bicycle roads in Gwangju and expand new facilities," adding, "To prevent collisions with joggers and walkers, we will widen bicycle roads in densely populated areas to secure pedestrian spaces."
Currently, Gwangju has dedicated bicycle roads along the Yeongsan River (25 km), Pungyeongcheon Stream (10 km), Gwangju Stream (10 km), and Daechoncheon Stream (18 km).
Since 2009, Gwangju City has been constructing dedicated bicycle roads to build an international eco-friendly low-carbon city.
Bicycle roads ensure accessibility and safety for cyclists and contribute to regional economic development by linking local culture and tourism areas.
Bicycle clubs have also proposed creating separate sidewalks alongside bicycle roads for jogging and walking to promote citizens' safety and convenience for cycling enthusiasts.
