[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] CJ Logistics announced on the 19th that, after investigating the family relationships of its delivery drivers, it was found that 1,390 couples (2,780 people) work together. This accounts for about 14% of the total 20,000 delivery drivers.
The number of married delivery driver couples working together has been steadily increasing every year. Compared to 2018 (1,800 people), it has increased by 54.4%. It also rose by 3.3% compared to last year (2,692 people).
The reason for the increase in married delivery driver couples is analyzed to be due to the growing importance of delivery drivers following the surge in e-commerce demand after COVID-19, which has changed perceptions of the job and significantly improved the treatment of delivery drivers.
As contactless delivery has become established, delivery time per box has decreased while income has increased, naturally leading to more delivery drivers working alongside their spouses. In particular, with the increase in volume, there has been a rise in duplicate deliveries of 2 to 3 packages to the same household, increasing delivery density and significantly lowering the entry barriers for women.
Typically, married delivery driver couples start by riding together in the delivery truck to assist with deliveries. However, as the volume in their assigned area gradually increases, they divide the area and increase their combined income by delivering separately.
Recently, improvements in delivery working conditions due to the introduction of automation facilities and sorting support personnel have also contributed to the increase in married delivery driver couples. Additionally, the ability to expand business scale through collection sales activities?bringing packages from clients such as shopping malls depending on individual capabilities?is considered an attractive point.
Because of this, not only married delivery drivers but also 'family delivery drivers' working together with children and relatives are continuously increasing. In fact, as delivery driving has established itself as a “job recommended to family members,” 4,098 delivery drivers were found to be working with family members such as children, siblings, and relatives.
A CJ Logistics official said, “As perceptions of the delivery industry change and working conditions improve, the number of family delivery drivers, including married couples, continues to rise. We will continue to enhance industry-leading treatment and welfare benefits to provide the best delivery service.”
