Jeonnam Police Hold Memorial Service for Fallen Officers in May
Condolences for the Spirit of Service of Late Police Senior Officer An Byeong-ha and Other Fallen Officers
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Jeonnam Police Agency announced that it held a memorial service at the Jeonnam Police Agency 'Ahn Byeongha Park' on the occasion of the 42nd anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, attended by the bereaved families of fallen police officers including the late Police Commissioner Ahn Byeongha.
Since 2019, the Jeonnam Police Agency has been holding memorial services with the bereaved families to mourn the sacrifices of fallen police officers, and this year marks the fourth memorial service.
The late Police Commissioner Ahn Byeongha, who served as the Director of Jeonnam Police Bureau during the May 18 Democratization Movement, refused the military junta's harsh crackdown, disposed of police weapons in Gwangju city, and is a symbol of a human rights police officer who protected the lives of citizens and the honor of the police.
The late Police Superintendent Lee Jun-gyu, who was serving as the Mokpo Police Chief at the time, refused orders from superiors for a harsh crackdown on protesters, prohibited live ammunition firing, and took measures to dispose of weapons to protect citizens.
Sergeants Jeong Chung-gil, Lee Se-hong, Park Ki-woong, and Kang Jeong-uk of Hampyeong Police Station died in the line of duty at the protest sites in Gwangju city while protecting the lives of citizens, unable to avoid a protester bus.
