The products supplied are certified through the biomass balance approach, marking a first among original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
BASF is supplying the e-coat product "CaroGuard 800 Resource" to BMW's Leipzig plant in Germany and the Rosslyn plant in South Africa. Across European plants, it is supplying the clearcoat product "iGloss Matte Resource." This means helping BMW produce car coatings using renewable raw materials. CaroGuard 800 is a product that extends the lifespan of millions of cars through excellent corrosion protection technology, and the company stated that by applying the biomass balance method, the carbon footprint can be further reduced. The product is applied to BMW vehicles produced at an annual average of about 250,000 units. Using BASF products can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 40%. It is expected that CO2 emissions from BMW plants can be reduced by more than 15,000 metric tons (MT) by 2030.

Through the biomass balance approach, raw materials such as "bio naphtha" and biomethane extracted from organic waste are introduced into the production process of the integrated (fairpoint) plant. Dr. Markus Kamit, a member of BASF's board, said, "As the world's largest supplier of chemical products to the automotive industry, we recognize the need to support customers with eco-friendly solutions," adding, "We are pleased to contribute to BMW Group's achievement of sustainable management goals in the automotive industry." Joachim Post, BMW's purchasing director, responded, "BMW Group heavily relies on innovative technologies from partners to reduce carbon dioxide emissions," and added, "BASF's renewable raw material-based coatings are an important part of the group's management."
