Fox Infection Cases Continue
Lindsay Long "High Possibility Fox Infected After Eating Birds Infected with HPAI"
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Nayeon] Authorities have declared an emergency as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is spreading to mammals in the north-central region of the United States.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced on the 13th (local time) that HPAI tested positive in a population of red foxes (common foxes native to North America).
According to the Department of Natural Resources, three juvenile foxes showing neurological symptoms were found in three different counties and tested for HPAI infection, all of which were confirmed positive. The department stated, "This is the first confirmed case of HPAI transmission to mammals in Wisconsin."
Lindsey Long, a veterinarian with the Department of Natural Resources, said, "It is highly likely that the foxes were infected after eating birds infected with HPAI."
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources also announced the previous day that "the first case of HPAI infection in wild mammals was confirmed," with foxes testing positive for HPAI.
Michelle Karstensen, head of wildlife health, expressed concern, saying, "In addition to Wisconsin and Minnesota, foxes infected with HPAI have been increasingly confirmed in Iowa, Michigan, and Ontario, Canada," and added, "There is a high possibility that other wild species such as rabbits and skunks will also show infection cases."
Dr. Jonny Schiffthal of the Minnesota Department of Health advised, "The likelihood of humans contracting HPAI is low, but avoid contact with wild animals that appear sick, especially waterfowl," and added, "If pets have come into contact with wild animals showing neurological symptoms, immediately consult a veterinarian."
