[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Lee Jun-hyung] Lee Jeong-sik, the nominee for Minister of Employment and Labor, has virtually admitted to allegations of falsifying his career history. However, the nominee maintains that the falsification was merely a simple mistake.
At the confirmation hearing held on the 4th by the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee, Lee stated, “(The false career entries) were mistakes made while relying on memory,” adding, “There was no (specific) intention.”
Democratic Party lawmaker Song Ok-joo pointed out the nominee’s false career and resume allegations that day. According to Song’s office, the false career entries submitted by the nominee for university professor appointments totaled 17 years, with four false resume items identified. Song said, “Falsifying career history is directly related to fairness issues,” and questioned whether the nominee is suitable for the fairness and common sense that President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol emphasized.”
The nominee admitted to including false career and resume information. Lee responded, “I apologize for (the false career entries),” and promised, “I will ensure this does not happen again.”
Lee also denied allegations regarding his eldest son’s draft evasion. Lawmaker Song pointed out, “Looking at the military service certificate of (the eldest son), there are suspicious parts regarding intent,” and added, “He postponed enlistment five times, enlisted, then after three days went home claiming to undergo a re-examination.” Song further noted, “He was later assigned to public service duty, which was eventually exempted, and there has been no explanation for this process.”
