The Start of the Donghak Peasant Revolution 'Gochang Mujang Gipoji' Designated as a National Historic Site
[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] The Cultural Heritage Administration has designated the ‘Gochang Mujang Giposi (高敞 茂長起包址)’ located in Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, as a nationally designated historic site.
‘Gochang Mujang Giposi’ is the gathering place and starting point where the proclamation announcing the beginning of the ‘Donghak Peasant Revolution,’ a large-scale democratic uprising aimed at eradicating corruption and injustice in the Joseon feudal society and defending national sovereignty under the banner of anti-foreign intervention, was declared. Although it had been difficult to accurately verify the exact location and clearly identify the site, various studies have confirmed that the area around 590 Guam-ri, Gong-eum-myeon, Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do is the actual Giposi (起包址) of the Donghak Peasant Revolution.
In addition to academic verification, numerous consistent testimonies from indigenous residents living around ‘590 Guam-ri area’ have been secured, confirming that the Donghak Peasant Revolutionary forces gathered and trained in this area.
Although the Donghak Peasant Revolution was a democratic uprising aimed at protecting national sovereignty from corruption and foreign invasion in the Joseon feudal society, it had long been perceived as the ‘Donghak Rebellion’ or a ‘rebellion.’ Fortunately, with the recent increase in interest and various academic studies on the Donghak Peasant Revolution, it is now being re-evaluated and recognized anew.
