People Power Party Initiates Nomination Process for June 1 By-Election
Nomination Applications on July 2-3 and Supreme Council Approval Around July 9-10
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] On the 29th, the People Power Party held its first meeting to nominate candidates for the by-elections held alongside the June 1 local elections.
At the meeting held at the National Assembly in the afternoon, Yoon Sang-hyun, the nomination committee chairman, stated, "A complete regime change can only be achieved when both central and local powers are replaced simultaneously," adding, "We must win not only the local elections but also the by-elections."
The People Power Party presented three main principles for nominations: ▲nominations that support the Yoon Suk-yeol administration's national agenda ▲nominations that lead to local victories ▲nominations tailored to local residents.
After the meeting, Chairman Yoon told reporters, "We will accept nomination applications next Monday (May 2) and Tuesday, and conduct interviews starting Wednesday afternoon," adding, "If possible, the Supreme Council will make a decision around May 9-10."
Regarding some speculation that Ahn Cheol-soo, the transition committee chairman, might make a surprise candidacy in the Gyeonggi Seongnam Bundang-gap by-election, which is the district of former lawmaker Kim Eun-hye who is running for governor of Gyeonggi Province, he responded to reporters' question about whether there was any specific discussion about the candidate by saying, "There was none."
