Gwangju City to Brighten Lighting at Accident-Prone Intersections
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Gwangju Metropolitan City is promoting a lighting tower installation project to improve nighttime intersection brightness for the safety of its citizens.
According to data analyzed by Gwangju from the Road Traffic Authority, a total of 77,000 traffic accidents occurred in Gwangju last year, of which 49% (3,784 cases) happened at intersections, highlighting the need for improvement.
Accordingly, Gwangju plans to install floodlight fixtures on existing traffic surveillance camera poles without adding structures that would spoil the cityscape.
The locations, based on recommendations from the National Police Agency and considering statistical analysis data from the Road Traffic Authority and on-site conditions, are three intersections: Mareuk, Ilgok, and Mokryeon, with installation to be completed by July.
In particular, the floodlight fixtures will be installed at a high position to prevent driver glare and visual obstruction, and the angle of the lighting facilities will be adjusted to minimize 'light pollution' for nearby residents and pedestrians.
Previously, since 2019, Gwangju has been installing LED floodlight fixtures at intersections such as the City Hall Korean Bank intersection. An analysis of the Road Traffic Authority's Traffic Accident Analysis System (TAAS) to verify the effectiveness of this project showed that after the implementation of the intersection brightness improvement project, the illuminance at intersections improved, enhancing drivers' forward object recognition and identification, resulting in a decrease in traffic accidents.
