Naju-si Accepts Reports for 'Yeosun Incident Truth Investigation' Until January 20 Next Year
[Naju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Naju City, Jeollanam-do announced on the 29th that it will accept reports from bereaved families of victims in the Naju area for the truth investigation of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident until January 20th next year.
This reporting and reception is being conducted following the enforcement of the "Special Act on the Truth Investigation and Honor Restoration of Victims of the Yeosu-Suncheon 10.29 Incident" (abbreviated as Yeosun Incident Act) on January 22nd of this year.
The Yeosu-Suncheon Incident occurred when some soldiers of the 14th Regiment of the Republic of Korea Army stationed in Yeosu refused the government's order to suppress the "Jeju 4.3 Incident," resulting in chaos and armed conflicts from October 19, 1948, until the lifting of the Jirisan mountain entry ban on April 1, 1955, in Yeosu, Suncheon, and parts of Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do, during which many civilians were sacrificed.
The reporting targets are victims and their bereaved families who were civilians at the time and died or went missing due to the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident, those who suffered aftereffects or were imprisoned.
The scope of bereaved families includes the spouse and direct ascendants and descendants of the victim, and if there are no higher-priority bereaved families, siblings of the victim, collateral relatives within the fourth degree, or those who perform ancestral rites or manage the victim's grave.
Reports can be submitted by visiting or mailing the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Support Group, city hall, or eup/myeon/dong administrative welfare centers with the report form and supporting documents posted on the Jeollanam-do Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Support Group and city hall websites.
Once the report form is received, city hall and eup/myeon/dong will conduct an investigation for truth verification by forming a fact-finding team based on the submitted information.
The Jeollanam-do Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Support Group's working committee reviews the investigation results, and after final deliberation and resolution by the Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident Truth Investigation and Victims' Honor Restoration Committee, the decision will be notified to the reporter.
A city official said, "As the path to restoring the honor of the victims has opened 74 years after the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident, we hope that the historical truth investigation will help heal the pain and grievances of the victims and their families," adding, "We will do our best to promote smooth reporting."
