Muan-gun Begins Investigation into Causes of Fish Deaths in Reservoirs during Spring
Estimation of Dissolved Oxygen Deficiency Due to Spawning Season Stress and Large Diurnal Temperature Variation
[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Oh Hwan-joo] In the past month, several reservoirs in Muan, Jeollanam-do have experienced the death of native freshwater fish such as crucian carp and common carp, prompting a joint investigation by Muan County and the Korea Rural Community Corporation.
According to a tipster who witnessed the death of crucian carp in an agricultural reservoir in Cheonggye-myeon, fish carcasses began to appear about a month ago, mostly crucian carp around 25cm in size.
The Korea Rural Community Corporation and Muan County believe that the mortality occurring only in certain fish species of specific sizes is likely due to stress during the spawning season and a lack of dissolved oxygen in the water.
A county official explained, "Water quality tests were conducted but no abnormalities were found, which is fortunate," adding, "It is presumed that factors such as insufficient rainfall in spring and a large temperature difference over several days caused the lack of dissolved oxygen."
Kim Na-yeon, head of the Environment Department, stated, "We will make every effort to prevent damage to residents using agricultural water through continuous monitoring and multifaceted review of the mortality phenomenon."
