Closely Related to Buddhist Martyrdom of Ichadon
The area around Pyoambong Peak in Gyeongju Geumgangsan will be designated as a nationally protected historic site. The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on the 22nd that it will collect opinions from various sectors for a month and finalize the designation after deliberation by the Cultural Heritage Committee. It is the Bukak (Northern Peak) of the Silla Wanggyeong Oak (Royal Capital's Five Sacred Mountains) and the Saryeongji (Four Spirit Site) where major national affairs were discussed. Wanggyeong Oak refers to the sacred mountains surrounding the center and four directions of the royal capital. Saryeongji was the place where important state affairs of Silla were deliberated. A Cultural Heritage Administration official stated, "It is a site densely packed with relics related to major events in Silla history," adding, "Its historical and academic value is outstanding."

The area around Pyoambong Peak in Gyeongju Geumgangsan is also closely connected to the martyrdom of Ichadon, which marked the acceptance of Buddhism in Silla. It holds the history of Buddhist adoption with sites such as Baekryulsa Temple and the Ichadon Martyrdom Monument, and nearby are numerous Silla Buddhist cultural assets including the Stone Seated Buddha of Gulbulsa Temple Site (Treasure) and the Dongcheondong Rock-carved Triad Buddha Statue (Tangible Cultural Property). This area was also used as a resting place for the deceased of the royal capital residents and as a space for Silla rituals. In particular, Talhae King's Tomb (Historic Site) and the Dongcheondong Tumuli Cluster (stone chamber tombs) are evaluated as showing the shift of royal burial spaces from the city center of the royal capital to the surrounding mountainous ridge areas.
