Assemblyman Sobyeongcheol Secures Additional 3 Billion KRW in National Funds for Suncheonman Bridge Reconstruction
Minister Jeon Hae-cheol of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety Meets Privately and Consults with Staff, Mobilizing All Available Resources

[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] The reconstruction project of the ‘Suncheonman Gyoryanggyo’ bridge, which connects Suncheonman National Garden and Suncheonman Wetland, is expected to accelerate construction progress after securing an additional 3 billion KRW in national funding.
On the 8th, So Byung-chul, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea (representing Suncheon, Gwangyang, Gokseong, Gurye (Gap) district and a member of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee), announced that he personally met with Minister Jeon Hae-cheol of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to secure additional budget for the ‘Suncheonman Gyoryanggyo Reconstruction’ project, a major issue of the Garden Expo, and after several consultations with the working-level staff, the project was finally selected as a special project under the Ministry’s policy.
This special project under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety is considered especially significant as it is an additional national funding project following the 4 billion KRW secured in last year’s ‘2022 budget’ approval.
First, Representative So focused on the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s special project funding, which has precedent in supporting international events and expos, to overcome the difficulty of receiving national funding from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport because the ‘Suncheonman Gyoryanggyo’ section is a local road. It is reported that he directly met with Minister Jeon and emphasized the necessity and urgency of the ‘Suncheonman Gyoryanggyo Reconstruction’ project.
Subsequently, Representative So actively communicated with the working-level staff, including department heads and team leaders of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, striving to maximize the scale of the special project budget.
In particular, he highlighted that the ‘Suncheonman Gyoryanggyo Reconstruction’ project is not merely a support measure for international events and expos.
He emphasized that the bridge, having been completed 54 years ago, received a D grade in a detailed safety inspection, and that the project urgently needs to be addressed to ensure the safety of Suncheon citizens as well as tourists visiting the ‘2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo,’ requesting a forward-looking review for support.
Thanks to Representative So’s efforts to secure the special project funding, it is said that the largest amount of resources, 3 billion KRW, among this year’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety special projects supporting local governments nationwide, was secured.
