The Democratic Party and New Wave held a signing ceremony for the merger agreement at the National Assembly that morning. Both parties agreed to merge as party-to-party integration under the name Democratic Party of Korea.
The two parties plan to hold a joint meeting of the merger task force as soon as possible and complete the merger before the 18th. Through this, they also plan to discuss the nomination issues for New Wave candidates wishing to run in the local elections. Kim Dong-yeon, leader of New Wave, has officially declared his candidacy for Gyeonggi Province governor.
Yoon Ho-jung, co-chairman of the Emergency Response Committee, said in his opening remarks, "The two parties will join forces to make the June local elections a starting point for political change for new politics," adding, "We will also mobilize all our party power to realize the introduction of the major electoral district system for basic councilors, which the People Power Party refuses."
