View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] As Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues for over a month, a female Ukrainian sniper who joined the battle to defend her homeland is gaining attention as a new hero.
On the 5th (local time), the U.S. media outlet New York Post introduced a female sniper called 'Ugoliok,' saying, "A new hero has emerged in Ukraine after the 'Ghost of Kyiv'." 'Ugoliok' means charcoal in Ukrainian.
The media reported, "Charcoal is praised among the Ukrainian people as the '21st Century Lady Death'." According to the report, a photo of Charcoal recently spread online, attracting great attention.
The photo was released by the Ukrainian Ground Forces on Facebook on the 3rd with the introduction "Hero of modern warfare." The photo shows Charcoal wearing military uniform, covering her nose and mouth with a scarf, carrying a camouflaged rifle slung over her shoulder. The Ukrainian Ground Forces did not disclose Charcoal's real name, age, or details about the operations she has carried out in this war.
Charcoal reportedly enlisted in the Ukrainian Marine Corps in 2017 to make a strong impression on her younger brother, who was serving in the military. During her service, she was assigned to missions against pro-Russian separatists in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.
She completed her service earlier this year and returned to civilian status, but rejoined the Marine Corps after Russia invaded Ukraine in February.
According to the New York Post, Charcoal said, "They (the Russian forces) are not human. Even the Nazis were not as evil as these monsters," and added, "We will definitely win. And I will stand firm to protect Ukraine until the end."
