US Strengthens Sanctions on North Korea Amid Focus on US-ROK and US-China North Korea Nuclear Talks
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] As the United States strengthens sanctions against North Korea, representatives from South Korea, the US, and China on North Korea's nuclear issue will meet locally to discuss responses to North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.
While South Korea and the US continue to pressure North Korea, China is demanding the US ease sanctions on North Korea, making it difficult to reach a consensus.
According to diplomatic sources on the 2nd, Sung Kim, the US Special Representative for North Korea and Ambassador to Indonesia, will travel to the US from the 3rd to the 7th to meet with US government officials and discuss various issues related to North Korea.
Kim is scheduled to hold consultations with Noh Kyu-duk, Director General for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the 4th.
He spoke with Director Noh on the day North Korea launched its intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on the 24th of last month, and on the 28th of last month, he held a trilateral phone consultation with the senior nuclear representatives of South Korea and Japan.
During this schedule, Kim will meet with Liu Xiaoming, China’s Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs and senior nuclear representative.
However, it is known that there is no planned trilateral meeting involving the senior representatives of South Korea, China, and the US during Kim’s visit to the US. It is also reported that Director Noh has no plans to meet Liu separately.
Amid ongoing conflicts between the US and China over various issues including the economy, security, and North Korea, attention is focused on the US-China senior nuclear representatives’ meeting.
At this meeting, Kim is expected to request cooperation in strengthening international sanctions and pressure in response to North Korea’s provocations. However, concerns are raised that it will be difficult to gain agreement as China and Russia have shown uncooperative attitudes toward sanctions on North Korea.
Meanwhile, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced on the 1st (local time) that it had sanctioned five entities that violated multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions and supported North Korea’s development of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and ballistic missile programs.
The newly sanctioned entities include the Rocket Industry Department, Chosun Victory Mountain Trading Company, Hapjanggang Trading Company, and Uncheon Trading Company.
The Treasury Department explained, “Today’s action targets North Korean WMD research and development institutions directly or indirectly related to new ICBM development and their subsidiaries that have financed these activities.”
