Gangwon Province announced on the 23rd that "together with Gwangju Metropolitan City and Ulsan Metropolitan City, we completed the preliminary planning research project for the 'Establishment and Utilization of a Super-Regional National High Magnetic Field Research Institute' last February, securing a logical business model and technical, policy, and economic feasibility to persuade the government."
'High magnetic field technology' is applied across all national industries including energy, transportation, medical and bio, and defense. It is also regarded as an essential high value-added technology to secure in the era of technological hegemony competition.
When applying the 'bio-medical' technology, a specialized field of Gangwon Province, MRI achieves more than 10,000 times higher resolution, increasing the success rate of treatment through early disease diagnosis.
It raises expectations for more than double the survival rate of intractable cancers (lung, liver, pancreas) with a 5-year survival rate below 30%, and almost no pain or aftereffects.
Previously, the three metropolitan local governments jointly promoted a preliminary planning research project to establish a basic plan with a budget of 400 million KRW (100 million KRW per institution) together with the Korea Basic Science Institute to attract super-regional distributed high magnetic field research infrastructure.
This project proposed a strategy where infrastructure, technology, and utilization form a virtuous cycle. The core is the establishment of three regional research infrastructures linked to region-specific specialized industries centered on national strategic fields and regional industrial demand.
In particular, economic feasibility was analyzed with a cost-benefit ratio of 3.8 or higher (a cost-benefit ratio of 1 or more is considered economically viable), generating 1.8 trillion KRW in production inducement, 1.2 trillion KRW in added value inducement, 48,000 jobs, and training 11,000 personnel.
Gangwon Province, Gwangju City, and Ulsan City plan to submit the final report of the project to the Ministry of Science and ICT, demanding that the 'Super-Regional National High Magnetic Field Infrastructure Construction Project' be reflected as a national project based on the justification and urgency of national support.
