Groundbreaking Ceremony for Saemangeum Energy Industry Convergence Complex Comprehensive Support Center

[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Jeonbuk Province announced on the 21st that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Energy Industry Convergence Complex Comprehensive Support Center at Saemangeum Industrial Complex Section 2, attended by about 50 people including Park Ki-young, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Song Ha-jin, Governor of Jeonbuk, and Yang Chung-mo, Administrator of the Saemangeum Development Agency.

The Comprehensive Support Center will begin construction with this groundbreaking ceremony, with a total project cost of 20 billion KRW. It is planned to be completed by July 2023, with a total floor area of 5,844㎡ and five above-ground floors.

The building will house a power trading center, legal support center, conference rooms, seminar rooms, 16 rental offices, and facilities for user welfare such as a cafeteria and fitness center.

The Comprehensive Support Center will serve as the hub and landmark of the Saemangeum Energy Industry Convergence Complex, functioning as a comprehensive platform to support resident companies and research institutions in the energy sector. It will also support the settlement and overall management of resident companies with excellent technology and maximize corporate competitiveness by promoting linkage and exchange with nearby research institutions.

Additionally, through its role as the control tower within the complex, the Comprehensive Support Center is expected to maximize the agglomeration effect as a global hub for the renewable energy industry. By establishing infrastructure within the complex for domestic and international energy companies, it will create a virtuous cycle synergy of research and development, demonstration, and commercialization through technological innovation and industry-academia-research collaboration, thereby revitalizing local job creation and the economy.

Meanwhile, in line with the recent energy transition policy, the government designated six domestic locations including Jeonbuk Saemangeum in November 2019 as energy industry convergence complexes to establish energy clusters with self-sustaining local ecosystems for achieving the 「RE3020*」 target and sustainable innovative growth.

The Saemangeum Energy Industry Convergence Complex was designated based on Jeonbuk Province’s application under the Special Act on Energy Industry Convergence Complexes. It consists of a total area of 23.9㎢, including Gunsan 2 National Industrial Complex (15.8㎢), Saemangeum Industrial Complex Sections 1, 2, 5, and 6 (7.7㎢), and Buan New Renewable Energy Industrial Complex (0.4㎢).

Governor Song Ha-jin said, “I am very pleased to play a significant role in the long-awaited Saemangeum development by the residents, and I expect that the activation of the Saemangeum Energy Industry Convergence Complex will greatly contribute to the government’s carbon neutrality 2050 realization and the industrial economy of Jeonbuk.”
