Automatic Bus Fare Payment 'Tagless' Expanded Across Gyeonggi-do Province
Excluding Double-Decker Buses and Dual-Door Vehicles
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gyeonggi Province announced on the 18th that it will expand the "contactless bus fare payment service (Tagless)," introduced to minimize concerns about COVID-19 infection and enhance passenger convenience, to all public buses throughout Gyeonggi Province starting from the 21st, excluding double-decker buses and dual-door vehicles.
The contactless fare payment service operates on the principle of determining boarding and alighting status through Bluetooth wireless communication between a beacon installed in the vehicle and the passenger's smartphone.
After installing the 'Tagless Pay-App' on a smartphone and registering a prepaid or postpaid transportation card, boarding and alighting are automatically processed and paid without the need to physically tap the card on the bus card reader.
If a passenger presses the 'Mobile Alighting Bell' button on the app before getting off the bus, an alert is displayed to the driver indicating that a passenger intends to alight, eliminating the need to press the alighting bell manually or to get up and move to do so.
To allow passengers to verify whether the bus supports this service before boarding, Tagless stickers are attached to the exterior of the vehicles, and an icon indicating Tagless support is displayed in the location guidance service of the Gyeonggi Bus Information app.
If passengers use or transfer to buses or subways that do not provide this service, they can still pay fares and receive transfer discounts in the traditional way by tapping their card on the card reader while the smartphone screen is on.
