[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Lee Junhyung] The competition to secure the new nuclear power plant project in the Czech Republic, valued at 8 trillion won, has officially begun. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), participating in the bidding, will compete against companies from the United States and France.
KHNP announced on the 18th that it has participated in the main bidding for the Dukovany nuclear power plant project in the Czech Republic. Earlier, Czech Power Company initiated the main bidding for the Dukovany nuclear power plant project on the 17th (local time) and sent bidding guidelines to KHNP and others.
The Dukovany nuclear power project involves constructing a 1000MW-class pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant in the Dukovany region in southeastern Czech Republic. The project is known to be worth approximately 6 billion euros (about 8 trillion won). Major global nuclear power companies, including KHNP, the US Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC), France's Electricit? de France (EDF), and Russia's Rosatom, have expressed their intention to bid. Winning the project would secure a favorable position in the Czech government's plan to build up to three new nuclear power plants under review.
However, the Czech government excluded Rosatom and China's China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) from the Dukovany nuclear power project bidding last year, citing security risks. Subsequently, the government announced a 'two-stage bidding process' allowing only those suppliers who pass the security evaluation among KHNP, WEC, and EDF to participate in the bidding.
All three suppliers, including KHNP, passed the security evaluation in January this year. The Czech government approved the start of the bidding for the Dukovany nuclear power project at a cabinet meeting on the 2nd of this month. The government plans to complete the submission of bids by the end of November this year and finalize the contract by 2024.
