Gochang-gun Passes 'Local Fiscal Investment Review' for Donghak Peasant Revolution Sacred Site Project

[Gochang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] The "Donghak Peasant Revolution Sacred Site Project" in Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, has passed the Local Finance Investment Review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, giving momentum to the project.

According to the county on the 15th, following the recent approval of the central investment review, the historical park development projects for "Mujang Gipoji" and "General Jeon Bong-jun's Birthplace" will be actively promoted.

This approval marks a great achievement after two and a half years since the project was notified for reconsideration due to reasons such as renegotiation of the annual national subsidy plan and re-conducting the economic feasibility study in July 2019.

The county has repeatedly visited central government departments to conduct continuous consultations and invested 200 million KRW of national funds and 100 million KRW of county funds to carry out the basic plan and feasibility study to supplement the reconsideration items.

Based on the results of the study last December, the county secured budget approval from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, confirming a total project cost of 22.5 billion KRW, and resubmitted the central investment review.

The county plans to expedite the project by issuing orders for basic and detailed design services within the first half of the year, aiming to start construction in 2023 and complete it by 2025.

Currently, administrative notice for the elevation of Mujang Gipoji to a historic site is underway, and General Jeon Bong-jun's birthplace is also designated as a monument of Jeollabuk-do, enhancing the status of Gochang-gun as the birthplace of the Donghak Peasant Revolution.

A county official said, "With the originally targeted project scale achieved and the successful completion of the central investment review, we will do our best to re-examine the history of Gochang, the birthplace of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, and create a commemorative space that coexists with local residents."
