‘Stalking’ Man in His 30s Sends Handwritten Letter to Ex-Girlfriend from Detention Center... Additional Charges Filed
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] A man in his 30s, who was arrested on charges of stalking his ex-girlfriend and is awaiting trial, has been additionally booked by the police for sending letters to the victim containing messages such as "I miss you" and "I am short on living expenses."
On the 12th, the Mapo Police Station in Seoul announced that they are investigating Mr. A (35) on suspicion of violating the Stalking Punishment Act.
Mr. A is accused of sending handwritten letters to the victim four times from the 15th of last month to the 6th of this month while being detained in a detention center. The letters reportedly contained messages like "Let's get married, have children, and live happily," and "Please come visit me." He also included his bank account number, claiming he was short on living expenses in the detention center.
The victim reported to the police immediately upon receiving the first letter last month, and the police applied to the court for provisional measures 1 to 3 (written warning to stop stalking, prohibition of approaching within 100 meters, and prohibition of approaching via telecommunications), which were accepted. However, Mr. A continued to send letters, and the victim reported again to the police on the 10th.
In December of last year, Mr. A was urgently arrested and indicted on charges of violating the Stalking Punishment Act. It is known that he took the victim’s phone during their relationship, blocked contacts of acquaintances, and prevented her from going out. He also reportedly threatened, saying, "If I can't reach you, I will kill your family."
Mr. A, who was brought to trial in early January, is scheduled for a first trial verdict at the Seoul Western District Court later this month.
