Forest Service Chief: "Fortunately, Successful Protection of Nuclear Power Plant, LNG Terminal, and Transmission Lines"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] The wildfires in Uljin and Samcheok threatened nuclear power plants, LNG production facilities, and power transmission lines, but fortunately, no significant damage occurred.
According to forestry authorities on the 5th, the wildfire that broke out the previous morning in Ducheon-ri, Buk-myeon, Uljin-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, spread to the boundary of the Hanul Nuclear Power Plant by the afternoon, driven by strong winds of 12 to 15 m/s.
Helicopters, fire trucks, and personnel were intensively deployed to contain the flames, and as the wind direction changed, the fire moved northward toward Gangwon Province, avoiding the threat of damage to the nuclear power plant.
Although the area around the nuclear power plant entered a stabilization phase, the advancing flames threatened the Samcheok LNG production facility, prompting emergency defensive measures overnight.
Forestry and firefighting authorities concentrated equipment and personnel around the wildfire, nuclear power plant, LNG facility, and power transmission lines to extinguish the fire and establish firebreaks, protecting key infrastructure.
