Russia and Belarus Expelled from Beijing Paralympics... "Athlete Participation Ban"
Andrew Parsons, President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), is holding a press conference on the 3rd in Beijing, China. Earlier, the IPC announced that athletes from Russia and Belarus would be allowed to participate in the Paralympics as 'neutral athletes.' However, strong opposition from Western countries quickly arose, and on the morning of the 3rd, the IPC held an emergency meeting and changed the decision to prohibit athletes from these countries from participating.

The Russian and Belarusian teams, who supported Russia's invasion of Ukraine, have been expelled from the 2022 Beijing Winter Paralympics.
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) held an emergency meeting on the morning of the 3rd and announced that it would not allow the Russian and Belarusian teams to participate in the Paralympics.
This decision was made in response to demands from other countries to impose sanctions on Russia and Belarus, who caused the Ukraine crisis. Andrew Parsons, IPC President, said, "The IPC is a membership-based organization and accepts the opinions of its member countries."
Previously, on the 2nd, the IPC had announced plans to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the Paralympics as "neutral athletes."
This meant that they would not be allowed to use their country names, flags, or anthems, and would be excluded from the medal tally, but their participation would be permitted. In response, countries such as the United Kingdom and Germany strongly opposed this.
Nadine Dorries, UK Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, said, "I am very disappointed with the IPC's decision," and protested, "This is a wrong decision and we request an immediate reconsideration."
Pascal Saint-Onge, Canadian Minister of Sport, also opposed, saying, "Allowing Russia to participate in international competitions sends the wrong message to Russian President Vladimir Putin."
Ultimately, the IPC decided to ban the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes less than 24 hours after allowing them to compete as "neutral athletes."
President Parsons explained, "In the past 12 hours, many countries contacted us and said that if we did not reconsider the decision, it would affect the Beijing Winter Paralympics," adding, "Many National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) have contacted their governments, teams, and athletes to express their intention not to participate in the Games."
