President Moon Attends Gunsan Shipyard Restart Agreement Ceremony...Encourages Officials
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in visited Hyundai Heavy Industries Gunsan Shipyard on the 24th and attended the agreement ceremony for the reopening of the Gunsan Shipyard, encouraging Hyundai Heavy Industries executives and employees as well as officials from Jeonbuk Province and Gunsan City.
The Gunsan Shipyard had been shut down in July 2017 due to the shipbuilding industry downturn, but after continuous dialogue and efforts among companies, the government, and local governments, it was agreed to resume operations starting January 2023.
So far, the government has supported the Gunsan and Jeonbuk regional industrial ecosystem to prevent its collapse by establishing the 'Support Measures for the Region Due to the Suspension of Gunsan Shipyard Operations,' strengthening cooperation between shipbuilding and shipping industries, and expanding financial support, and plans to continue providing ongoing support for the reopening.

President Moon expressed great pleasure that, unlike the 'Tears of Malmo,' Gunsan City did not give up on its main industry, shipbuilding, and through its efforts, the reopening of the Gunsan Shipyard has become possible. He also stated that regardless of his term, the government plans to focus policy support on restoring the shipbuilding industry ecosystem in the Gunsan and Jeonbuk regions.
