30 Korean Residents Wishing to Remain in Ukraine
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] Excluding the Crimean Peninsula, a total of 74 nationals are currently staying in Ukraine (as of 6 p.m. local time on the 17th), and it is known that about 30 of them have expressed their intention to remain.
On the 18th, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs official stated, "The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Ukraine is continuously persuading about 30 overseas Koreans who have expressed their intention to stay to evacuate, and is actively taking all necessary safety measures in preparation for emergencies."
This number is lower than the approximately 50 people who had expressed their desire to stay as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 15th. The 50 people announced at that time included 10 overseas Koreans staying in the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia unilaterally annexed in 2014. Excluding the overseas Koreans in the Crimean Peninsula, about 40 remain, and it is known that about 10 of them recently expressed their intention to leave.
The approximately 30 overseas Koreans who maintain their intention to stay are reported to have their livelihoods based locally due to reasons such as international marriages with locals.
