Air Force Also Expanded and Reorganized into Missile Defense Command
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] The Air Force Air Defense Guided Missile Command will be expanded and reorganized into the 'Air Force Missile Defense Command.'
According to the Ministry of National Defense on the 17th, the Ministry has announced the legislative notice of the 'Air Force Air Defense Guided Missile Command Decree (draft)' which includes the unit name change and reorganization plan. In April, the Air Defense Guided Missile Command under the Air Force Operations Command, responsible for missile defense, will be reorganized into the Missile Defense Command.
The expanded Air Force Missile Defense Command will monitor strategic and operational aerial threats and carry out complex, wide-area multilayer missile defense and regional air defense missions. The Air Defense Guided Missile Command under the Air Force Operations Command performs the mission of detecting missiles from North Korea and neighboring countries first through ballistic missile early warning radars and immediately intercepting them.
This name change is in preparation for the deployment of the long-range interceptor missile (L-SAM), which is known to be in the final stages of development by the military. It also appears to be related to the Ministry of National Defense’s previously announced plan to expand and reorganize the Army’s Missile Command into the Missile Strategy Command.
