[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province has developed a home-use robot that can treat depression in the elderly.

On the 7th, according to Gyeonggi Province, the research team led by Professor Hwang Bo-taek-geun of the Department of Computer Engineering at Gachon University, conducting research at the Gyeonggi Regional Research Center (GRRC), developed an artificial intelligence health management service that can manage mental health issues such as depression in the elderly or single-person households through conversations with virtual characters capable of emotional interaction.

The Gachon University research team processed about 30 question sentences based on the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), a representative screening tool for depressive disorders, into a conversational format.

They then built a training dataset consisting of 13,500 answer sentences sorted into positive, neutral, and negative categories, and 36,000 sentences for additional conversations.

All sentences are classified by topics mainly of interest to the elderly, such as health, hobbies, and interpersonal relationships, as well as eight emotions including joy, sadness, anger, and disappointment, enabling the artificial intelligence (AI) to understand the emotions and topics of the conversation partner's utterances and respond accordingly.

The Gachon University Regional Research Center plans to sequentially apply the AI health management service to 'Bomi,' a home daily care robot, starting this year in collaboration with the participating company, Robocare Co., Ltd.

An Chi-kwon, Director of the Science and Technology Division of Gyeonggi Province, emphasized, "We expect to achieve mental health treatment effects for the elderly through the developed artificial intelligence (AI) health management technology," adding, "We will actively promote commercialization and do our best to increase sales of healthcare companies in the province."
