[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] Samsung Electronics announced on the 9th that starting with the new products unveiled at 'Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2022' on the 9th, it will apply eco-friendly materials recycled from marine waste to Galaxy devices. Through this, the company aims to pursue innovation in mobile product development while contributing to the reduction of marine pollution.
Samsung Electronics has succeeded in developing discarded fishing nets, commonly called 'Ghost nets,' into materials usable for smart devices. This is one of the important journeys to realize the eco-friendly vision for the Galaxy ecosystem, 'Galaxy for the Planet,' announced last August.
Approximately 640,000 tons of fishing nets are discarded worldwide each year, left unattended for centuries, threatening marine life and damaging coral reefs and natural habitats. Ultimately, this disrupts natural ecosystems and affects humanity's food and water resource supply.
By recycling collected discarded fishing nets into materials for smartphone components that require high reliability, Samsung Electronics minimizes environmental impact and motivates Galaxy device users to pursue a more sustainable lifestyle.
In the future, the company plans to expand the application of materials recycled from marine waste not only to smartphones but also across the entire lineup of the Wireless (MX) division. Additionally, it will continue to discover and use eco-friendly materials such as plastics recycled from post-consumer materials (PCM) and recycled paper.
Samsung Electronics aims to achieve by 2025 △the application of recycled materials in all new Galaxy products △elimination of plastic materials in product packaging △zero standby power for all smartphone chargers △zero landfill waste through recycling of waste generated at MX business sites worldwide.
