[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] As psychological and physical exhaustion among childcare center staff has intensified due to COVID-19, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is taking steps to protect the physical and mental health of childcare center workers.
On the 7th, the Seoul Childcare Support Center announced that it has produced and distributed six YouTube videos focused on physical and mental health for childcare staff, created in collaboration with experts from various fields.
The videos cover four main topics: ▲stretching exercises tailored for childcare staff ▲emotional expression methods for healthy relationships ▲emotion regulation techniques practiced in childcare settings ▲daily stress management methods. Together with medical specialists, psychological counselors, and physical therapists, the videos provide physical and psychological management techniques that childcare workers can apply and cope with in both childcare situations and daily life.
The stretching exercises tailored for childcare staff address common pains experienced in childcare settings and are divided into three simple exercise videos that can be practiced within childcare centers. The videos feature physical therapist and YouTube channel operator ‘Choi Jaeseok’ of ‘PT Jaeseok,’ who participated based on his experience treating childcare teachers.
For childcare staff who engage in various relationships with infants, parents, and colleagues, a video on emotional expression methods for healthy relationships was also produced. Counselor and YouTube channel operator ‘Na Yerang’ of ‘Counselor Utta’ introduces the nature of emotions and the importance of emotional expression, offering conversational techniques applicable in daily life and childcare situations.
To maintain healthy relationships, appropriate emotional expression is essential. The video explains how emotions can be communicated following the sequence of ‘Observation-Thought-Emotion-Request.’ It particularly guides methods by applying cases that may arise in childcare settings.
The emotion regulation techniques practiced in childcare settings first emphasize the importance of emotion regulation and the negative impacts that can occur if emotions are not managed properly in childcare situations. It introduces the need for regular self-checks and practical methods such as the emotional thermometer and the 15-second rule for anger control that can be applied in childcare environments.
The final topic introduces daily stress management methods for childcare staff. Stress varies according to individual personality, and it is important to find personal ways to relieve stress through ‘rumination’ and ‘self-reflection.’ The video introduces the ‘reframing technique’ as a method to promote self-reflection and effectively handle stressful situations.
