Hanwha Systems to Upgrade Performance of ‘K1E1 Tank Gunner Sight’
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] Hanwha Systems has won the contract for the ‘K1E1 Tank Gunner Sight Performance Improvement Project.’
On the 28th, Hanwha Systems announced that it signed a contract with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) for the ‘K1E1 Tank Performance Improvement Gunner Sight System Development’ project.
The gunner sight, which serves as the tank’s ‘eye,’ plays a pivotal role in accurately observing targets day and night and aiming to increase the tank’s attack success rate. Until now, the K1E1 tank gunner sight has faced difficulties in operation and maintenance due to discontinued parts and aging equipment. The company expects that through this system development, equipping the K1E1 with gunner sights at the level of the K2 tank, which is on par with the latest global tanks, will improve overall operational performance and enhance the efficiency of equipment operation and maintenance.
Through this performance upgrade, Hanwha Systems will achieve ▲significant reduction in combat preparation time by decreasing the cooling time of the thermal detector ▲improved stabilization performance to maintain target aiming during tank maneuvering, thereby increasing hit rate during movement ▲enhanced night observation performance and reduction of whiteout effect after firing by applying a high-performance thermal module ▲installation of daytime camera and LCD display to confirm day and night images.

In July of this year, Hanwha Systems succeeded in applying domestically developed thermal detectors, a core component of the K-series tank gunner sights. The thermal device detects infrared rays emitted by targets at night, converts them into electrical signals, and then displays them on a monitor through optimal image signal processing techniques. The company explained that this will improve military operation and maintenance efficiency by facilitating parts acquisition and maintenance, reducing costs, and eliminating the need for new development expenses, thereby saving costs.
