[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] The ‘One Team’ movement between Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, and Lee Nak-yeon, former leader of the Democratic Party, has begun.
On the morning of the 27th, Candidate Lee and former Leader Lee held the launch ceremony of the National Vision and National Integration Committee at the party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul. This followed their agreement on the 23rd, after a luncheon meeting, to jointly lead the Vision Committee.
At the launch ceremony, Candidate Lee repeatedly expressed his gratitude for former Leader Lee’s participation. He said, "Despite many difficulties, I sincerely thank you for joining together for the historic mission of the Democratic Party," and emphasized, "I believe this is an important time to present a national vision to overcome the crisis and create new opportunities, and to achieve national integration, which is the most essential role of politics. I sincerely appreciate your decision." Candidate Lee added, "From now on, as co-chairs with former Leader Lee, we will do our best for the national vision and national integration, regain the trust of the people, and enable the Republic of Korea to embark toward a new future."
Former Leader Lee, who ended a long period of silence after losing the party primary and began supporting Candidate Lee, responded, "Issues related to the presidential election are being raised, and disputes around them continue. Verification is necessary, but there are things that must not be overlooked," adding, "We need to refine and inform the public about how to manage and overcome this crisis and how to improve social polarization. Through this, we must increase public trust." He continued, "The committee should also work to preserve and nurture the ‘Democratic Party-ness’ of the Democratic Party," emphasizing, "The Democratic Party must be reformed. However, the Democratic Party-ness must not be damaged." Former Leader Lee said, "Reform should be about revitalizing the spirit and values of the Democratic Party in line with the times. I hope this committee contributes to such matters."
The committee plans to select key agendas under the themes of national vision and national integration and make them government policy tasks for the next administration. They will also listen to voices from the field through a ‘Vision Tour’ visiting various regions. The first tour region will be Honam.
