Through this agreement, the two agencies have established a mutual cooperation and support system in the navigation and aviation meteorology fields, enabling efficient preparation for the upcoming 2023 International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety evaluation.
ICAO continuously evaluates the aviation safety management systems of 193 countries worldwide, designating countries with inadequate safety management as safety concern states, thereby restricting new route approvals or additional flights.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Meteorological Administration will actively cooperate in responding to the aviation safety evaluation by faithfully implementing ICAO's international standards and recommended practices.
They will also cooperate in establishing and implementing South Korea's navigation and aviation meteorology policies in accordance with ICAO's Global Air Navigation Plan and future air traffic system transition plans.
Policy and institutional support measures will be prepared to ensure that the Ministry's air traffic management agencies and the Korea Meteorological Administration's aviation meteorology agencies can smoothly provide air traffic and aviation meteorology services.
According to the National Air Navigation Plan, the Ministry and the Korea Meteorological Administration will also join forces in the 'smart meteorological information' sector, which analyzes real-time 4D meteorological information supporting flight operation decision-making and the probability of hazardous weather occurrences.
