[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jung Soon-gyun) will air a promotional video on the American news channel CNN from the 17th to the 7th of next month.
The district will broadcast the 60-second promotional video a total of 82 times through CNN International (CNNI), which targets a global audience: 40 times in the Americas including the United States and Canada, and 42 times in 27 Asian countries including Japan, China, Australia, and the Philippines.
The promotional video contains Gangnam's core values such as ‘Eco-friendly City’, ‘Future-oriented Attractive City’, ‘Inclusive Welfare City’, and ‘Empathetic Administration City’, and vividly introduces tourist attractions like COEX, Bongeunsa Temple, and Yangjaecheon Stream to overseas viewers.
Jung Soon-gyun, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, said, “During the 7th elected term, Gangnam-gu is reborn as a world-class city through international events such as the ‘Yeongdong-daero K-POP Concert’, ‘IEF 2020 International eSports Festival in Gangnam’, and ‘Medical Tourism Festa’, as well as large-scale development projects including the ‘Yeongdong-daero Complex Development’. We will actively promote overseas to instill the perception worldwide that ‘Gangnam is indeed different.’”
Last October, the district opened the only promotional booth in East Asia at the world’s largest video content exhibition ‘2021 MIPCOM’ held in Cannes, France, and was introduced by leading global media such as the BBC and the United States’ top entertainment magazine ‘Variety’. Currently, it is participating in the online ‘Singapore ATF’ and is negotiating content provision with about 50 companies from 40 countries, including its own production ‘Gangnam Insiders Picks’.
Mapo-gu (District Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) announced on the 24th that it has installed and begun pilot operation of a ‘Digital Promotion Board’ outside the Mapo-gu Office building to quickly deliver district news.
The ‘Digital Promotion Board’, composed of four 55-inch screens, is an electronic bulletin board that displays legal notices, announcements, various district news, and various life-related information as digital images.
This project was carried out as a 2021 Mapo-gu resident participatory budget project, actively accepting residents’ proposals wishing to install smart information boards with high information accessibility.
A district official said, “By switching from the existing paper bulletin boards where printed materials such as announcements and posters are attached and replaced to a digital method, it can be conveniently managed through an online remote management system, improving work efficiency.” Additionally, it can prevent the neglect of expired promotional materials and is expected to save budget by not producing paper prints.
The operating hours of the digital promotion board are from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., with each post automatically repeated for 10 seconds. Posting and deletion of posts are automatically performed according to the preset promotion period, making management easy and enhancing the timeliness of promotion.
It also has a touchscreen function, allowing users to pause the automatically switching posts by pressing the button below the screen to check detailed content, and a slide function to browse information by swiping manually.
Especially, the legal notice and announcement section can be expanded to full screen by touching the screen to view content in large letters, and it is equipped with a text-to-speech (TTS) function to guide text audibly, enabling easy access to information for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and visually impaired.
The district plans to utilize the advantages of the digital promotion board, which enables rapid disclosure of various administrative information, to proactively respond to various disaster situations. To this end, the district plans to provide customized services such as cooperation with other public institutions, fine dust alerts using IoT sensors, traffic information, and missing child information.
Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “We expect that the operation of this digital promotion board will further improve residents’ access to information,” and added, “We will actively introduce smart administration in line with changing social trends to strengthen communication with residents.”
Jungnang-gu (District Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) will officially open and operate the Jungnang Media Center (209 Yongmasan-ro, Jungnang-gu) at 3 p.m. on the 28th, which will play a central role in local media cultural activities.
With the advent of the one-person media era, the district opened the Jungnang Media Center to support residents not only as consumers or recipients but also as direct media producers and providers, and to enable residents to participate in various media activities.
The Jungnang Media Center, a single-story building with a dedicated area of 450㎡ (approximately 136 pyeong), is equipped with professional facilities and the latest equipment to support digital media education, residents’ media creative activities, and serve as a cultural activity hub.
From the digital education room for media technology and production practice to the video editing room where filmed videos can be comprehensively edited, the creator room for personal broadcasting, and the visible radio studio capable of radio filming and broadcasting, production, editing, and broadcasting are possible in a one-stop process. Various media equipment from beginner to professional levels can also be rented.
In the lecture room, residents can take general education such as media literacy (the ability to correctly read and write media), which is essential in the digital age, as well as media theory and humanities lectures. The media cafe offers books and videos with access to OTT services like Netflix and Wavve, providing a place to relax.
Especially, the multipurpose studio is designed as a small-scale performance hall, allowing video shooting, recording, news recording, movie viewing, and performances, enriching residents’ cultural life.
Additionally, the center plans to operate various customized media education programs linked with schools, general resident media education, media utilization education in daily life, and advanced and expert courses to train professionals, strengthening media use and production capabilities of local residents regardless of age, supporting all residents to freely express their stories through media in the digital era.
To commemorate the opening of the media center, special programs for residents have been operating since the 11th, including smartphone video production, one-person creator education, children’s news production experience, and an independent film theater featuring director Park Hong-min’s works, running on a trial basis until the end of this year. It has already received enthusiastic responses from residents ranging from children to the elderly.
One resident participating in the smartphone video production class said, “After work, attending classes at the media center has boosted my confidence in video production and editing, bringing new vitality to my life.”
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “The Jungnang Media Center is a media cultural hub where anyone can easily produce and experience media and enjoy cultural activities,” and added, “We ask for much support and interest so that the media center can beneficially settle into residents’ daily lives.”
Dongdaemun-gu (District Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) announced that it has been finally selected for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s resident-led regional balanced New Deal excellent project and secured 150 million KRW in national funding.
The resident-led regional balanced New Deal project was launched for the first time this year to provide financial support to local governments that plan and discover New Deal projects tailored to local characteristics together with residents and promote projects that residents can feel.
Accordingly, Dongdaemun-gu applied for the project ‘AR Memory Travel with Museum and Metaverse Yakryeong Market Construction’ by integrating smart technology into Seoul Yakryeong Market, Korea’s representative traditional medicinal herb market. The project was finally selected as an excellent project after document screening, consulting, and presentation evaluation.
Based on the secured national funding, the district will actively promote the project in 2022. The project plans to implement three themes: ▲ development of museum immersive content (AR) with storytelling on the history of Boje-won, a Joseon Dynasty relief institution for the poor ▲ AR memory travel showing the formation process of Seoul Yakryeong Market ▲ creation of a metaverse Yakryeong Market that virtualizes Seoul Yakryeong Market, the largest oriental medicinal herb market in East Asia.
Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, “By integrating smart technology into Seoul Yakryeong Market, Korea’s representative traditional medicinal herb market, we will embody the history and culture story of traditional Korean medicine and market changes and development connecting the Joseon, modern, and contemporary eras. We will do our best to create a traditional market that all age groups can enjoy in connection with the Seoul Korean Medicine Promotion Center (Seoul Yakryeong Market Korean Medicine Museum), a wellness tourism destination.”
Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Kim Soo-young) announced that it has completed the creation of a ‘Mobile Planter’ in Mokdong Happy Square.
The ‘Mobile Planter’ is a small-scale park that combines and arranges movable planters and resting facilities in spaces where it is difficult to plant trees, such as squares and sidewalks.
Happy Square (917-11, Mok 1-dong), located on the Mokdong Walkable Street, is a place with a large floating population due to the concentration of various commercial facilities, apartment complexes, and office buildings nearby. Although it is a space frequently used by local residents in the center of Mokdong, it has long required maintenance due to the desolation caused by the interruption of parallel street trees and the presence of old resting facilities that spoil the aesthetics.
Accordingly, Yangcheon-gu placed 14 planters with straight and beautiful King Oak trees planted in the center of Happy Square. In addition, eight sets of distinctive resting chairs with design elements were attached to the planters, and bars were installed on top of the planters to place personal belongings or tumblers, creating a ‘Mobile Planter’. Bright landscape plants such as Hucera were also planted around the King Oak trees inside the planters to add a fresh feeling.
The ‘Mobile Planter’, planted with green trees and flowers, is expected to become a green resting space in the city where people want to stay by offering beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons in a space that was previously just passed by. Furthermore, it is expected to provide cool shade in summer, reduce fine dust, and improve urban landscape.
Kim Soo-young, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “I hope the ‘Mobile Planter’ created in Happy Square, a representative pedestrian-dense area in our district, will become a local landmark that offers residents rest in their daily lives,” and added, “We will continue to expand and create green spaces in the city through various projects.”
Seongbuk-gu (District Mayor Lee Seung-ro) announced the opening of Wolgok Youth Center (hereinafter the Center), a dedicated space for youth, on the 22nd.
Wolgok Youth Center is a youth training facility that was scheduled for demolition due to its old facilities but was reborn as a 1 basement to 3 floors building with a total floor area of 1,046㎡ after expansion and remodeling through continuous consultation and discussion between the district and city. It is expected to function as a hub for culture, play, rest, and learning for Seongbuk-gu youth.
The center has been entrusted to the Korea Youth Foundation (Center Director Jung Jin-hee) for operation since September 1. Inside, there are spaces where youth can enjoy various cultural activities such as an open studio, media room, band room, makers room, and youth hangout (autonomous cultural space). Various programs for youth such as media content production and VR experiences will be operated in the future.
At the opening ceremony, the Seongbuk-gu mayor, representative youth, and the center director declared ‘Our Promise’, pledging to support the future of youth. The declaration was read and sealed at the event, with the following content.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

* We will create joyful days and dreaming tomorrows together at Seongbuk-gu and Wolgok Youth Center.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A district official said, “This declaration will be posted in the youth hangout space and we plan to fulfill the promise together in the future.”
Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, said, “At the newly opened Wolgok Youth Center, we will operate various activities and programs tailored to youth needs to create a child and youth-friendly city, Seongbuk-gu,” and added, “It will also establish itself as a facility that closely cooperates and coexists with local residents, not just youth.”
