7th Year Since Establishment... Conducting Professional and Consistent Volunteer Activities with Wallpaper Technician Certification Obtained
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks (Director Kim Ji-yong) was selected as an outstanding company for the Jeollanam-do social contribution program on the 23rd and received the Jeollanam-do Governor's Award.
The Jeollanam-do Social Contribution Outstanding Program is an event that discovers and rewards excellent programs among companies contributing to the welfare of Jeonnam residents. It was first implemented last year to promote a culture of sharing within the province.
This year’s second award ceremony was held online due to COVID-19 social distancing measures.
Gwangyang Steelworks operates a talent volunteer group that incorporates the knowledge, skills, and experiences of its employees into volunteer work, actively practicing the corporate citizenship management philosophy by carrying out sharing activities throughout the local community.
Among them, the wallpapering talent volunteer group's housing environment improvement project, which leads efforts to create healthy and pleasant living environments for local neighbors, was selected as this year’s outstanding social contribution program in Jeollanam-do.
Founded in 2014, the Wallpapering Talent Volunteer Group (Leader Choi Kwang-seok) has continuously carried out housing environment improvement activities for neighbors’ residences and social welfare facilities around the steelworks in collaboration with the Gwangyang City Healthy Family and Multicultural Family Support Center.
Members, who have even acquired wallpapering technical qualifications for professional and systematic volunteer activities, visit neighbors in need of housing environment improvements on their days off from shift work to support wallpapering, floor mat replacement, and home repairs.
Thanks to the efforts of the Wallpapering Talent Volunteer Group, now in its seventh year since its founding, a total of 231 households, including 20 this year, have been able to live in more comfortable environments.
In addition, the company actively practices the corporate citizenship management philosophy in various ways in the local community, such as COVID-19 quarantine volunteer activities and support for typhoon disaster area recovery, realizing the value of coexistence.
Kim Tae-young, leader of the External Cooperation Section at Gwangyang Steelworks, who received the award on behalf of the company, said, “We are very pleased that the Gwangyang Steelworks Wallpapering Volunteer Group was selected as an outstanding social contribution program by Jeonnam Province. We will faithfully practice the corporate citizenship management philosophy so that the helping hands extended by the POSCO talent volunteer groups can expand to the local community and create a warm society.”
Choi Kwang-seok, leader of the Wallpapering Talent Volunteer Group, said, “When neighbors smile brightly after seeing the transformed homes by our own hands, I feel proud as a member of POSCO’s corporate citizenship. While volunteering, we meet people with various stories, and I will strive even harder to bring smiles to their faces.”
Meanwhile, Gwangyang Steelworks has been operating a total of 43 talent volunteer groups, having founded five groups in the first half of this year and newly launched three more groups last September.
