Momentum Builds for the Creation of Goheung County Sky Park

[Goheung=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shim Jeong-woo] Jeonnam Goheung-gun (Governor Song Gwi-geun) announced on the 17th that, as a result of all-out efforts including visits to the National Assembly to secure national funds for 2022 related to the creation of ‘Goheung-gun Sky Park,’ it secured 1.3 billion KRW in national funds for the columbarium and natural burial site projects, giving momentum to the project.

Goheung-gun Sky Park is an eco-friendly funeral facility. In October 2020, through a site selection announcement, the area around Hohyeong-ri, Goheung-eup was selected as the project site, and preliminary administrative procedures for construction are underway with a goal of completion by December 2023.

The total area of Sky Park is 187,373㎡, where a columbarium, columbarium wall, natural burial site, parking lot, and management office will be established. It plans to provide one-stop funeral services and also function as a park offering a resting space for residents, creating a new concept of funeral facility.

Although the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the main ministries in charge of the Sky Park project, had a policy to completely exclude new facilities due to high nationwide demand for funeral facilities, Goheung-gun’s governor and related officials actively engaged with ruling and opposition party budget committee members in the National Assembly, securing 1.3 billion KRW in national funds as an increased budget item near the final stage of the National Assembly review.

A county official stated, “Based on the national funds secured in next year’s budget, we will actively promote the project so that residents can start using the natural burial facilities from the second half of 2023.”
