"Paramedic on Probation After Demanding Billion-Won Compensation Claiming 'Colleagues Ostracized Me'"
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Ju Cheol-in] An emergency medical technician who demanded compensation worth hundreds of millions of won due to bullying and poor working conditions was sentenced to probation in the appellate court as well.
The Changwon District Court Criminal Division 5 (Presiding Judge Kim Byung-ryong) announced on the 15th that A (49), who was tried on charges of attempted extortion, was sentenced to six months in prison with one year of probation, the same as the original trial.
A joined a hospital in Gimhae as an emergency medical technician in December 2018 but was notified of dismissal in the same month and reinstated in May of the following year.
He decided to demand compensation for mental damages, claiming that employees ostracized him and treated him unfairly, and that the working conditions were poor.
Accordingly, in September 2019, he demanded 150 million won in compensation for mental damages, a guarantee of 5 million won after tax for external work, and a written contract for lifelong employment from hospital officials.
He threatened that he had evidence of hospital corruption such as pharmacist rebates and proxy surgeries by medical device sales representatives, but was rejected.
In October of the same year, he pressured the hospital director for 600 million won in compensation for mental damages and lifelong job security, but was similarly rejected.
