Human Rights Commission Re-elected as Chair Country of the Aging Working Group of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The National Human Rights Commission of Korea announced on the 15th that it has been re-elected as the chair country of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) Aging Working Group meeting.
The Human Rights Commission has served as the chair country since the launch of the GANHRI Aging Working Group in June 2016. With this re-election, it will serve as the chair country from June next year, when the new term begins, until June 2024.

At this working group meeting, the necessity of establishing a Convention on the Rights of Older Persons and measures to protect and promote the human rights of the elderly in the post-COVID-19 situation were discussed. Song Doo-hwan, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, who presided over the meeting, emphasized, "As the global population aging is progressing rapidly, it is necessary to establish a Convention on the Rights of Older Persons to address this issue."
